Samantha Carter...who is she?

Samantha CarterBorn in 1974 in Basingstoke, the home of roundabouts and puffer jackets, Samantha Carter escaped to London at the earliest opportunity.  From her base at the London Guildhall University, Sam made the most of the diverse music scene on her doorstep, particularly her true love jazz.  Anywhere from the Gas Club in Leicester Square and the Hanover Grand, to the Blue Note in Hoxton and even the Rhythmic in Islington, she could be seen bleary eared until the early hours of the morning.

Needing respite from the hedonistic lifestyle she was leading, Samantha returned to Basingstoke and joined a band!  After 17 months and three days she decided to hang up her microphone (for the time being) and pick up the pen (or the keyboard in these advanced times).

Samantha Carter...in disguise for a gig?Finding herself a slave to music journalism, Samantha now travels around the Home Counties (how spiffing) checking the good, the bad and the plain ugly in the world of bands and DJs.  As well as writing for Josaka, she has a page in the Buzz Section of the Basingstoke Observer, for which she is always dreaming up new ideas.

As she is always asking people questions we decided to ask her a couple...and here is what she said.

Most Embarrassing Record Ever Owned?

“You’re The One That I Want” – John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John (aged 7).  My best friend snapped it because I wouldn’t swap it for a Shakin Stevens record.  I was devastated!"

First Record Ever Owned?

"When I was seven my mum bought me a record player from a jumble sale, one of those ones that looks like it’s in a suitcase.  She let me pick five of her records that I liked as I was too young to buy my own records.  I chose 'Road Runner' by Jnr Walker & The Allstars, 'Heard It Through The Grapevine' by Marvin Gaye, 'Brass In Pocket' by the Pretenders, 'Get Down' by Gene Chandler and 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' by Roberta Flack.

Your Worst Ever Haircut?

"In the 80’s of course! I had the tips (about inch and a half) of my blonde hair dyed black, like the girl from Berlin who had the Top Gun hit!"

Most Hated Style Of Music?

"I don’t hate any, but I can’t relate to Heavy Metal."

Naughtiest Thing Ever Done?

"When I was nine a boy in my class dropped a pound note and I picked it up. I told him I wouldn’t let him have it back unless he showed me his willy! He didn’t, and I gave it back anyway!"

Best Three (in no order) Unsigned Bands That You’ve Heard?

1.      Short People Alison Rolls (their lead vocalist is God wearing knickers!)

2.      DaftLane (massively)

3.      Supa Tumba (from what I’ve heard so far)

Have You Ever Felt Guilty About Giving A Bad Review?

Yeah, I don’t want people to feel bad. But it’s also about audience reaction and comments that I hear, so I try to give a rounded and constructive view. I respect anyone with the bollocks to get up there and strut their stuff.
