Every now and again a CD comes my way that is
so bad I can barely stand listening to it all the way through.
Thankfully, this was not one of them.
From their enclosed biography I gather that Politan are relative
newcomers to the fray but this recording does little to betray
that fact. Kicking off with yojne (took me a while to realise
that was enjoy backwards) the band have, in my opinion,
started with their strongest song. A wise move, as this track is
an excellent introduction to their sound.
Before we go on, lets get a personal pet peeve out of the way
first. I make no secret of the fact that I dont like it when
British vocalists sing with faux-American accents. However, its
going to get especially boring for everyone who happens to read
these reviews Im doing if I keep banging on about it. Ill
accept that to others its less of a problem and let sleeping
dogs lie.
By contrast, Im an absolute sucker for a good vocal harmony.
Not to disappoint, Politan indulge me from the outset and I
really do think it adds a lot to a bands vocal performance when
they do include appropriate harmonies. Furthermore, can you get
a name more suited to rock than that of vocalist Jonty Dexter?
This lad was born to be in a band, by name at the very least.
The four tracks pass by rather quickly, with an energy that
would be well received in a live setting Id be interested to
see whether this energy is transferred in to their performances.
The production has been done pretty well as the CD sounds rather
good. There are elements that Id suggest need a little work but
this is certainly above the standard required for an acceptable
demo.
Politan wont be setting the world on fire with this CD but they
are certainly heading in the right direction and have made a
strong start. You can check out the band for yourselves via
